New Media: The End of the Conventional Media ? This is a title of seminar was organized by the Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI) held in Bali, Sanur on November 27th 2008. In this seminar many speakers reveal the trend shift in traditional media into new up risen media, in this care are represented by the Internet Media. Print media now has a big competitor coming from new media that combine internet, audio-visual and mobile. One of the speaker Nukman Luthie said " The habits of reading newspapers is nearly extinct among young people." Chief Editor Detik.com Budiono expressed the same opinion told that the condition is very supportive development of new media. He thought there was no barrier to the Internet infrastructure to synergy with other technology such as mobile phones and television. Predicted in the future that will happen is a convergence between new media with the print media.
While one of the speakers (Handhi S Kentjono - CEO MNC Sky Vision) stated that the online media would not wipe out printed media altogether. One of the reason he said that the country’s infrastructure has yet to reach the level where it can support a nation-wide internet network. The archipelago nature of the country coupled with the limited capability of its communication satellites is hampering the effort to expanding internet coverage.
Despite all the debate that occurs, data released by Zenith Optimedia stated that the share of online advertising will see an annual growth rate of 23 percent annually during the 2007-2010 period. At the same time the advertising shares of newspapers, magazines, television and radio will decrease. In year 2008 online media received just Rp 80 billion (US$6.7 million) of the country’s total advertising expenditure of Rp 42 trillion. The number itself will continue growing as the advertiser aware the function and its use of internet, how they effect consumer decision and habits. In the future time will tell, but meanwhile there is a good opportunity on online media to grow and became leader among traditional media.
